Students can choose the topic from the 2 below:

1. How does you major impact your future?

2. What should you do to be globally competitive in your field?

Contest info and rules:

1. 2-3 members per group.

2. There are 4 contest groups- Freshman: Levels 1-4 Group A /Levels 5-7 Group B

                                             Sophomore: Levels 1-4 Group()/ Levels 5-7 Group ()

3. The presentation should be between 5-7 minutes in length.

4. Should use the presentation as midterm---you can make the presentation a portion of your midterm if you want to add something else to the exam. 

5. From each class---one team will move on to the actual presentation contest.

6. Contest should be around week 10.

7. There is time allotted in the syllabus (Presentation Work) for you to work on the presentation during class---however, this time should really be used to prepare them---teach and practice presentation skills.

Course Description/Objectives: Course Description/Objectives: This course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to improve and practice conversational English and writing. Emphasis will be placed on speaking, writing, reading, and vocabulary skills. The instructor will employ the textbook and additional supplementary materials to provide an environment for English conversation, basic writing skills, and communicative learning. Primary Objectives: By the end of the semester, students will be able to: 1.        Learn, understand and effectively use new vocabulary (see attached list). Ss will be able to define and use the terms correctly in sentences 2.        Grammar points: Demonstrate their understanding through conversation, speaking and writing. A.       Too, too much, too many, and enough B.       Use had better, ought to, and might want to  to say what’s advisable 3.        Hold and carry out conversations based on the topics from the book-Unit 10-12 4.        Respond to questions (either verbally or written) in complete sentences 5.        5 paragraph essay: : 5 paragraph essay:  introduction (hook, connecting information, thesis/topic sentence),  3 Body paragraphs (well developed), conclusion. 6.        ***Demonstrate their understanding of presentations by giving a presentation/speech. (Intonation, delivery, organization, gestures etc). Secondary Ojbectives: If time permits---students will be able to 1.        Effectively answer TOEIC Question 10 & 11 (Solution & opinion). Ss will be able to respond to questions with well-developed answers. ****CPHW will hold a presentation competition during the semester. There will be a class semester project (presentation). One team (2-3 member team) from each class (based on level—e.g. A, B, C). The team that represents the class should be the team with the highest/best presentation score in the class. The class project/presentation will be used as the midterm. Sometime after the midterm, the CPHW presentation competition will take place. Additional information will be provided.

Woosong University College of Public Health and Welfare Course Policy

You are expected to behave appropriately in your class.  This means: ·         Turn off your cellular phone.  ·         Pay attention to the teacher. ·         Do not talk when your teacher or your classmates are talking. ·         Participate in class.  If the teacher asks you a question, try to answer it. ·         Bring your book, pencil, paper and dictionary to class every day.

Attendance: It is university policy that students attend every class.  Failure to attend class will lower a student's final grade.  No one can expect to improve their English if they do not come to class.  If a student is late for class 3 times, it will count as 1 absence.  If a student is absent, they MUST talk to their Department Head and obtain an excused absence form.  That form must then be given to the instructor. HWC Attendance Policy 1) Make sure every student comes to class on time. Attendance should be checked and recorded by class on Next-Generation Synthesis System (http://was.wsu.ac.kr). 2) Absences are exempted for the following cases when official documents are submitted. Other than these seven cases, any other absences are not excused. ① One day trip or round trip in a day in order to redeem national obligation ② One day trip or round trip in a day in order to participate in any events or official tests which are permitted by the President of the Univ. ③ Five days for the loss of a parent ④ Five days for the loss of a grandparent ⑤ Five days on the occasion of the student’s marriage ⑥ One day on the occasion of parent’s 60th birthday ⑦ When hospitalized or an emergency caused by diseases or accidents 3) Over 30 minute tardiness is counted as absence. 4) Three times of tardiness is counted as one absence. 5) Class absence over one-third of the course is graded as F. 6) When a student is out of the classroom without the professor’s permission, it will be treated as absence.

Grading:  Attendance = 20% Homework/Participation and/or Project = 20% Midterm exam  = 20% Final exam  =40%

This course will have two exams: a Midterm Exam and a Final Exam. The instructor may also administer quizzes or other assignments at any time during the course. Homework and Participation will be assessed at the discretion of the instructor as per standard Woosong policy.

Student Meetings

Each student must meet with the teacher for 10 minutes sometime during the semester. You may meet with the teacher before class, after class, drop into his office, make an appointment, etc. It is YOUR responsibility to make this meeting. Failure to do so may result in a 1 point reduction of your participation grade.
